Peak
Lapel Tuxedo is Big Winner at Golden Globes
BOSTON, MA, January 17, 2005 - The stars were out in full force Sunday night
at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 62nd annual Golden Globe
Awards. The Ceremony took place at the Beverly Hills Hilton, and although
much of the fashion talk revolved around what the women were wearing, the
men were just as decked out in their tuxedos. The big winner, the peak
lapel tuxedo.
The
peak lapel tuxedo is back and it’s gone floor level.
The original peak lapel tuxedo is one of the most proper
styles for a tuxedo a direct descendent of the tailcoat.
The top of the lapel is peaked sharply upward and outward.
On the other hand, a floor level peak lapel, a lapel that
extends beyond the top collar but pointing parallel to the
floor instead of upwards, is the updated version that many
celebrities choose to wear last night. Floor level peaks
were spotted on Best Actor Performance in a Musical Motion
Picture Winner Jamie Foxx.
A
popular accessory combination was the laydown collar, non-pleated
shirt with four-in-hand tie. Best Actor in a Dramatic Motion
Picture Winner Leonardo DiCaprio sported this look, as well
as William Shatner, who took home the Golden Globe for Best
Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Television
Series and teen heartthrob, Orlando Bloom.
Another
notable trend was the laydown collar, non-pleated shirt with
a neutral shade bow tie. Best Director – Motion Picture
Winner Clint Eastwood wore this look and so did the Cecil
B. DeMille Award Winner, Robin Williams. While Best Performance
by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture Winner,
Clive Owen, wore the laydown collar shirt with a classic
black bow tie.
While
the peak lapel tuxedo took home top honors at this year’s
Golden Globes, it’s the tuxedo in general that shone
brighter on the men this year than in recent years. Perhaps
it’s the glamour and style of 1920’s Hollywood
heyday that was so elegantly displayed in this year’s
Howard Hughes biopic, “The Aviator”, Winner of
Best Dramatic Picture that inspired the men to dress up more
but whatever it was, the women are saying thank you!
