Q. I want to wear a long black tie with my tux. Does the tie go over top of the cummerbund or under? Or do I not wear a cummerbund?
- Jason
A. Don’t wear the cummerbund either get a vest or wear just the tie.
Q. I have the wedding of a friend in a very elegant club, and I have to wear a tuxedo. I want to know if I can wear a black long tie with my tuxedo or does it have to be a bow tie? And if i can wear a long tie, does the shirt have to be plain?
- Santiago
A. You can wear either I recommend if you go with a long tie that it be plain just to be on the safe side.
Q. Hi, I just purchased
a Calvin Klien two button tux. Now I have your standard white dress
shirts and black bow tie- do I need to buy a special tuxedo shirt and
vest with this style? Do you think this is too plain? I don't want to
go overboard - can I rent a tux shirt and/or vest from a tux rental
place?
- Tony,
New York
A.
You can never go wrong with basic black!
If you are looking to add variety to your look, you could purchase a
black or silver vest with a long tie.
Q. My fiancé is telling
the groomsmen that they can wear their own tuxes....... am I crazy to
say that they will not look the same if they wear their own??? I want
uniformity... he is saying that as long as they are in black it will
be fines?
- Jennifer,
Massachusetts
A.
Many people who have a very tight
wedding budget or a very small wedding under 20 people let their
friends wear their own tuxedos; if this is the type of wedding you're
having or you are really laid back and don’t care about pictures
matching, then you will be fine with this plan. If like most people
you are spending $1000 on a videographer and photographer then this
may be a bad plan. All black tuxedos are not created equal!
Besides the fact they could be made from different fabric which
appear to be different shades of black in pictures, there are three
different lapels, different shirt collars, different pleats on the
shirt (or no pleats), different accessories and most like they will
all have different shoes. For the best photos, buy or rent the same
tuxedo for the groomsmen.
Q. Bridal
and bridesmaids gowns take such a long time to order and come in.
How far in advance before the wedding should I select my tuxes?
- Clarissa,
Maine
A. Once the
bride has picked out her color scheme, the tuxedos can be selected.
It’s
never too early. Six to eight weeks will give your groomsmen
enough time to get fitted.
Q. We are having a semi-formal wedding.
I am wearing a traditional full-length gown with long train
and my bridesmaids are wearing
full-length gowns. My fiancé and his groomsmen, as well
as our fathers, will all be wearing black tuxedos. How can
we encourage our guests to dress up too?
- Jamie, Rhode Island
A. Dressing up does make an event more memorable
and when you look good, you feel good. To ensure a certain level
of formality
for your event and to ensure that no one shows up in business casual,
add the words “Black Tie Invited” to your wedding invitations.
These words let your guests know that they can expect a nice affair
and there will be people attending in tuxedos. In fact, they’ll
know that you’re encouraging people to go formal. Even if
some people choose not to dress in a tuxedo, you can expect that
most guests will dress up in a suit.
Q. We have several out-of-town
ushers. If there isn’t a
Classic Tuxedo near them, how do they get fitted for our wedding?
- Barry, Washington D.C. A. Classic Tuxedo has anywhere in the US measurements
so your out-of-town ushers will receive the same “Classic Fit” using
our fitting system that your local ushers will receive. Your formalwear
specialist will refer your ushers to our website where they can
print out an online measurement card. Out-of-town ushers can go
to any local tuxedo retailer in their area and get a free courtesy
fitting. At least two months before the wedding, the measurement
card gets mailed to the Classic Tuxedo store you are renting from
or the cards can be e-mailed directly to the store through our
website. The tuxes will be altered and ready for your wedding day. |
